Skenes, the 6-foot-8 rookie right-hander, will start the Midsummer Classic for the National League on Tuesday night, just over a year after the Pirates made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. In 11 starts this season, Skenes is 6-0 with a 1.90 ERA. He has 89 strikeouts in just 66 1/3 innings, and threw seven no-hit innings in his last start against the Brewers. When Skenes takes the mound in Arlington on Tuesday night, he will become just the fifth rookie pitcher to start the All-Star Game, joining Hideo Nomo (1995), Fernando Valenzuela (1981), Mark Fidrych (1976), and Dave Stenhouse (1962). Skenes, 22, is the youngest pitcher to earn the nod since Dwight Gooden in 1986.
